Confessions of an e-book Addict

I need to start a group called ”e -books anonymous” to help me with my addiction.

When I see an offer for a free e-book filled with secrets to help me do anything better and faster, I give up my e-mail address right away. (Actually, I use a separate address for free stuff, to keep my main e-mail account from filling up too fast.) [Read more...]

4 Ways to Create a Stress-Free Home Office

Think about the stress-free life of working from home. There are no co-workers to interrupt you, no boss looming over your shoulder and no set work schedule.

You can come and go as you please, dress however you like and even stop working early to catch a movie. (I can’t be the only one who does that!)

Sounds perfect, doesn’t it?

It is, except for the hidden stress-inducers including interruptions from your family and neighbors, a few household chores screaming for your attention and the lure of a nearby refrigerator. I complain there’s never anything “fun” to eat, but then I remember I do the shopping. [Read more...]

‘Tis the Season to be Cranky?

Almost every blog post on Working Naked has something to do with improving the way you work from home, growing your business or making your business run more smoothly. Today’s post isn’t so much about running your business as it is about dealing with others who run a business.

Yesterday I picked up a gift I’d ordered from one of my favorite stationery stores. I looked at the order to make sure my friend’s name was spelled right and told the owner of the store how much I liked the gift.  She thanked me several times for being nice to her.

Was she serious? I didn’t give her a standing ovation, a high five or even a pat [Read more...]

Time to Tackle Those Tedious Home Office Tasks

I have a “when I feel like it” list.  It includes a few things I need to do like order books, check out a few new iPhone apps and figure out how to use InDesign.

It’s sort of a dumping ground for all of the little tasks I want to do but haven’t had the time to do. Nothing on the list is ever as time sensitive as the things on my daily To Do list, so I list them separately and figure I’ll get to the tasks eventually.

You may not realize that you have a “when I feel like it list.” Take a close look at your To Do list and pull out the tasks you’ve been moving forward for months. Then create a new list of things [Read more...]

How Are You Protecting Your Small Business?

Guest post by DeAnn Flores Chase

As a small business lawyer, I work with entrepreneurs, business owners and professionals on a daily basis. For new business owners, I advise that an entity be formed from the start. For existing business owners, I advise that an entity be formed as soon as possible. Business owners have several business entities to choose from, including corporations and limited liability companies (LLCs). In my opinion, it is critical that a business owner choose one, and not do business as a solo proprietor or partnership.

A properly formed and maintained business entity, such as a corporation or LLC, can provide the following benefits: [Read more...]

A Business Coach Can Help You Get Your Business on Track

working with business coachA few months ago when I knew I’d taken my business as far as I could, I hired business coach Ori Bengal to help me move my business forward. I’m not someone who likes to pay others to tell me what to do (just ask my former personal trainer), but when it comes to working with Ori, it’s more of a cooperative effort. His skills as a top-notch strategist, adviser, techie pro and cheerleader all rolled into one, have already helped my business grow.

A business coach isn’t the right solution for everyone but for [Read more...]

Bare Essentials: Hot Home Office Products

The writing is on the wall
Why use a boring white board for notes and reminders when you can use a peel and stick chalkboard? Each pack comes with four vinyl (9” x 12”) sheets that are removable (they won’t harm most surfaces) and you can reposition them if you need to. Another option is to buy chalkboard paint and paint it directly on your wall, but chalkboard sheets are easier and less messy to install.

Fish you could have this?
I like products that are functional and stylish, but now I’m into fun and functional products. This fully functional fish tank will add a little life and interest to your home office. Plus there’s a place to hold supplies, you’ll always know what time it is and you’ll have extra light in your home office. The low voltage pump and filtration system runs off of USB power. The fish run off of fish food.

Power on-the-go
In business, power is good. When you travel with a smart phone and other tech tools, power is everything. The USB Flexible Charging Station can charge up to four mobile devices at one time. Whether you want one place in your home office to power up or you want to avoid dealing with endless cords (who doesn’t?), this roll-out docking station can help you get all the power you need.

Five Ways to Nurture Your Child’s Entrepreneurial Spirit

I come from a long line of entrepreneurs. From the time my sons were little, I’ve encouraged them to get an education, get business experience through various jobs, and then go out on their own.

Whether or not you realize it, you may be passing along your entrepreneurial traits and your enthusiasm for being your own boss, to your children. In this guest post by Anne Leedom, you’ll learn how to determine whether your child will be inclined to follow you down the entrepreneurial path.

There’s Always Room for a Home Office

Some people tell me that they don’t have space in their home for a home office. But no matter what size home you have, there’s always room for a home office.

Take Time to Evaluate How You Use Your Time

A good friend of mine’s younger son gauges time in terms of 30-minute TV shows. When he’s driving cross-country with his family, he asks “how many shows?” so he can figure out how much longer he has to be in the car.  He can’t do anything about how long a car trip will take, but if he knows when a trip will end, it makes the ride a bit more tolerable.

Managing time is impossible, but managing what you do with your time, isn’t. You have 168 hours available to you in each week — if you find more, let me know —and part of that time you’re sleeping. When you figure out which types of time you can control and can’t control, you’ll be able to accomplish more. [Read more...]
