When you’re working naked and running your own business, it’s not always easy to stay in touch with other small business owners. They may have the same thoughts and business concerns as you, but how do you know?
Brother International Corporation didn’t just wonder about what small business people were thinking…they asked them. In a recent survey of 500 U.S. small business owners, they discovered some interesting stats. A few of my favorites are:
1. Which of the following, if any, has been helpful in managing work-related stress?
- Spending time with family and friends 45%
- Exercising 34%
- Getting away from your workplace for short breaks 29%
- Cleaning or organizing your workspace 22%
- Getting away from your workplace for several days or more 22%
- Spending time alone 17%
- Establishing a phone-free or email-free time 11%
- I do not use any strategies to manage work-related stress 7%
- None of these 4%
2. Do you think that you spend more, less, or about the same amount of time working than if you worked for someone else?
- A lot more 49%
- A little more 16%
- About the same 17%
- A little less 7%
- A lot less 10%
3. In an economic environment like the current one, which of the following is still a benefit of owning your own business?
- Schedule flexibility 50%
- Pursuing my passion on a day-to-day basis 35%
- Making my dream a reality 34%
- Professional autonomy 28%
- Providing jobs for people in the community 25%
- Compensation 21%
- Other 1%
- None of these 3%
