Working Naked: It’s a Sign

Writing a blog called Working Naked has finally caught up with me.  While I know that the term working naked refers to working alone and being stripped of the corporate workplace, I can’t help but notice anything with the word naked.  It’s a sign…actually two.

What’s in Your Drawers?

If you look through the drawers in your desk, you may find a junk drawer or two. These are probably filled with things you didn’t know where to store, so you threw them into a drawer to deal with later. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Take some time to sort through these items and separate the useful from the useless. You’ll be able to find what you need when you need it.

What I Learned Last Night

1. If it’s late and you’re tired and you don’t have an immediate deadline, stop working and go to sleep.
2. When you’re tired you can make mistakes like deleting all of your videos on YouTube.
3. You can’t recover deleted videos from YouTube.
4. It takes longer than you think to upload all of your videos to YouTube.
5. There’s always tomorrow…a new chance to make mistakes and learn new things.

Have you ever had one of those nights?

A Friend in Need or a Friend Indeed

#283-FriendsFriend or freeloader?
Is your expertise worth anything? Hell, yes!  So why do some friends think it’s OK to ask for your time, help and advice for zip, nothing, nada? The site Freelance Switch — I’m one of their newest fans — published a comic that illustrates how hard it is to say no to someone you’ve always considered a friend. But then again, would a friend ask you to do something time-consuming for free? Food for thought.

You gotta have (virtual) friends
Personal friends (ones with no business ties to you) are good to have but sometimes business friends are even better. While I was sitting at the airport this week with the other lunatics who decided to fly over spring break, I thought about all of the business friends I’ve made online.  I wondered if I’d thanked them enough for all they do for me. Free Advice Worth Paying For

iStock_000002575178XSmallI’m addicted to webinars…especially free ones. Maybe it’s because when I attend one, I don’t have to jump on a plane or dress business casual. Best of all, if I want to take a bathroom/food/Twitter break during the session, I can, and no one knows or cares.

So when an interesting webinar crosses my e-mail, I sign up.  A few that I’ve “attended” lately have been hosted by HubSpot. They cram a lot of information into their sessions so most of the time I’m able to pick up a few helpful tips.

Sites that offer weekly newsletters loaded with business tips are irresistible too. One of my favorite blogs, Copyblogger, is offering a newsletter called “Internet Marketing for Smart People.”  Maybe they’re mind readers because they always seem to write a post about a topic I’ve thought about or a problem I’ve needed to solve.

Working naked and learning at the same time…Life is good!

Size Doesn’t Matter When You’re Working Naked

After so many years of helping people set up home offices and teaching them ways of working naked full time, I’m still surprised when someone tells me he or she doesn’t have room for a home office.  How can that be? In some cases size matters (we’re not going there) but when it comes to home offices, size doesn’t and shouldn’t matter.  Instead it’s what you do with that space that determines whether a home office is productive or not.

These two home offices are small and simple, yet functional.  Think about it…what do you need other than a laptop, printer, Internet connection and a phone, aside from clients wanting your product or service on a regular basis?

Check out these home offices and the next time you think you don’t have enough room to set up shop, think again.

Make Your Small Business Look Bigger

#279-Bus. biggerLooking bigger isn’t a great idea when you’re trying on swimsuits (trust me, I know!) but when it comes to business there’s nothing wrong with a small, one-person business looking larger than it is. Ivana Taylor, who writes the popular blog Strategy Stew, wears all of the hats in her business yet on the outside, her small business seems anything but small.

In her blog post 8 DIY Marketers Tools For Making Your Business Look Bigger,Taylor shares useful and affordable resources to help a small business appear larger.

Fixing Your Home Office Files

There’s nothing fun about filing (unless you use colorful or patterned file folders to make it a bit more interesting). But filing is something anyone working naked needs to know how to do.  In this exciting, new, informative video (notice the hype) I’ll show you four ways to improve your filing system. Of course the alternative is to keep your papers stacked all over your office.

Make Your Phone Line a Gold Mine

Connect. Laptop and smartphoneWhen’s the last time you took a close look at your phone? If you use it right, you can increase your profits.

• Make calls on the right days and during the best times. Some people are morning people while others wait until late afternoon to kick into high gear. Monday morning isn’t a good time to call someone for the first time. That’s when people organize their week, recover from the weekend or go to meetings. Call a prospect or new client on Tuesday or Wednesday when the week is already underway. [Read more...]
