Is It Time to Quit Working From Home?

Time to quitDo you ever get the urge to quit your business? I do.

It’s not that I don’t love what I do, it’s just that sometimes I feel like I’m spinning my wheels and my hard work isn’t always paying off.  Then I get a new client or I’m interviewed by a magazine or a Web site and my enthusiasm comes back.  The last time I felt like quitting, I reinvented my business and I haven’t wanted to quit in a long time.

The Web Worker Daily post Know when to fold ‘em gives some excellent clues to help you figure out if it’s time to quit and move on, or stick it out until your business clicks.  Several of the tips are right on target.

  • You’re spinning your wheels. There are situations where no matter what you do you just can’t make it work. I knew I wasn’t alone! It’s frustrating to think you’re doing the right thing and doing everything by the book, but still not getting results. That’s when it’s time to quit your business or develop a new strategy.
  • You’re overextended. The more your business grows, the more selective you have to become with how you spend your time and energy. When I ran my organizing business many years ago, I finally came to a point where I couldn’t stand helping one more person organize their kitchen, bathroom or garage. I switched to working exclusively on home offices and I haven’t looked back.
  • You’ve hit a plateau or are floundering. Most successful people know that failed attempts, ruts and slumps are part of the game, but they also know when to say enough. It’s simple: if it’s not fun, quit.  What’s the point of being miserable all day, doing what you don’t enjoy doing, even if you’re working for yourself in your home office.  That’s what corporate jobs are for!
