Entrepreneurs are a rare, stubborn breed. We can do everything better, faster and with fewer mistakes than anyone else and it’s not easy for us to delegate. But as your business grows, and the amount of time you have to spend on sales and marketing, filing, and invoicing shrinks, you may need to add additional staff or hire subcontractors. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

As your business grows, you may have to hire others.

Someone who’s been around the business block for years won’t need much training. And they can bring ideas and systems to your business that you may not have thought of. The only disadvantage to hiring a skilled person is that they may have bad habits that have to be “unlearned.”

On the other hand, an unskilled employee gives you the opportunity to train someone to fit your company’s work style. An unskilled person, who doesn’t have extensive business experience, shouldn’t have bad habits that need to be broken. The disadvantage is that they’ll require more training and patience on your part.

If you want to eliminate the inconvenience of training and minimize tax requirements, consider hiring freelancers to handle certain projects. The rule of thumb? Ask yourself what your time is worth. If paying someone to do something that will take you several hours is less than the amount of money you can generate during that time, give the task to someone else.

Just remember…you get what you pay for.
