Nobody does it better

Entrepreneurs are a rare, stubborn breed. We can do everything better, faster and with fewer mistakes than anyone else and it’s not easy for us to delegate. But as your business grows, and the amount of time you have to spend on sales and marketing, filing, and invoicing shrinks, you may need to add additional staff or hire subcontractors. There are advantages and disadvantages to both.

As your business grows, you may have to hire others.

As your business grows, you may have to hire others.

Someone who’s been around the business block for years won’t need much training. And they can bring ideas and systems to your business that you may not have thought of. The only disadvantage to hiring a skilled person is that they may have bad habits that have to be “unlearned.”

On the other hand, an unskilled employee gives you the opportunity to train someone to fit your company’s work style. An unskilled person, who doesn’t have extensive business experience, shouldn’t have bad habits that need to be broken. The disadvantage is that they’ll require more training and patience on your part.

If you want to eliminate the inconvenience of training and minimize tax requirements, consider hiring freelancers to handle certain projects. The rule of thumb? Ask yourself what your time is worth. If paying someone to do something that will take you several hours is less than the amount of money you can generate during that time, give the task to someone else.

Just remember…you get what you pay for.

Working naked with others

I’m all for working naked, teambuilding and improving morale. But all at the same time? Not so much. David Taylor, a business psychologist, disagrees.

This company took working naked to a whole new level (Telegraph.co.uk).

This company took working naked to a whole new level (Telegraph.co.uk).

According to the Telegraph.co.uk, Taylor convinced the staff of a design and marketing firm in the UK to hold “Naked Friday” to “strip away inhibitions and talk to each other more openly and honestly.” The entire company worked completely naked except for two female workers who kept on their black underwear and a man who wore a “posing pouch.” (Check it out on Google.)

This poses a few questions:

• Is a leather chair more comfortable than a fabric one?

• Do you avoid bringing in a hot lunch for fear of singeing important bits while microwaving?

• How do you avoid laughing uncontrollably when the way you imagined someone naked is completely wrong?

Gives Casual Friday a whole new meaning.

Promises, promises

My mom used to say, “Your eyes are bigger than your stomach.” I despised that saying for years, mostly because she was right. I’d put more on my plate than I could realistically eat. Unfortunately, the same holds true in business.

Don't promise what you can't deliver.

Don't promise what you can't deliver.

A huge corporation with a large budget may cause you to make promises you can’t keep and add more to your plate than you can handle. Before you say yes to a request from a big client, take a close look at your current schedule and decide if you have time to complete the job. Don’t forget to consider if you’re even the right person to handle the project.

When you receive a call from a prospect, look at your calendar and at the same time scrutinize your list of ongoing projects. If you accept a new client, will you be able to do a good job if you face a time crunch? If not, you can kiss any longterm relationship goodbye.

When setting delivery and completion dates, always build in a cushion of several days to make sure you deliver what you promise, when you promise it. Even if you’re the most qualified person to handle a job, yet you’re unable to meet your client’s expectations, you could damage your relationship with that client. And rebuilding a damaged relationship takes longer than you think.

Grow into a routine

It took me a few years of working from home to figure out that I needed to get on some type of schedule. My schedule is flexible, but for the most part I work out early, take a shower, get dressed and make the 5-second commute to my home office. There are days though, when I head to my home office in my workout clothes—fully intending to exercise after I post my daily blog—and before I know it, it’s noon. Sound familiar?

Work schedules intimidate some folks, while others function well within certain time constraints. Follow a work schedule as much as possible to keep your productivity high and your motivation strong. You may feel more productive in the morning, so schedule your important tasks during that time. If you feel inspired after lunch to tackle big projects, schedule those tasks in the afternoon. Common sense, right? Then why doesn’t everyone do it?

Think of a schedule as a way to keep you focused without feeling confined. After all, the beauty of working naked is that you can set your own hours.
